With the recent approval of Commissioners Court, the Harris County Sheriff’s Foundation has stepped up to provide funding in the amount of $169,884.58 for the purchase and donation of a Leica 3-D Scan Station to provide state of the art technology for use in complex crime scene investigations. This technology will allow for more accuracy and efficiency in logging and documenting evidence from homicide and other complex crime scenes.

At a recent press conference, Mr. Franco Valobra, Founding Member and Vice President of the HCSOF and representatives of the HCSO and the Texas Rangers unveiled this equipment with a demonstration of its capabilities to accurately measure millions of data points to recreate a crime scene in the third dimension. Sheriff Ron Hickman joined by members of the Texas Rangers and Deputies with the Investigative Unit demonstrated how this equipment is able to create a virtual rendering of a crime scene. This equipment allows for an objective depiction of a crime scene providing an opportunity for more accuracy in the evaluation and presentation of important objective evidence to investigators, prosecutors and ultimately jurors. Additionally, with the addition of this 3-D Scan Station, the HCSO will be able to increase its efficiency in providing regional and rapid response and assessment of crime scenes.
